Producing an Action Sequence

” There’s an electrical thing about movies”Oliver Stone

Today we were set an assessment to film and produce a 3 minute action sequence which must include 4 specific characters. This was due in for the following week therefore we were split into our teams and were encouraged to establish an idea / scenario, location of production, character profiles, camera angles and a script which will be presented to the rest of the groups and Steve tomorrow. Furthermore this would then allow us to ask suitable questions to others who have a different perspective on our short film and for them to add and queries that we might have overlooked.

First of all we picked our location. We had the simple idea of doing a chase sequence for the main part of our short film therefore using the long corridors in B and C corridor of Glyndwrs’ main university building was ideal. However because of the location we accepted the fact that we had to shoot the film on the weekends otherwise we would disrupt a lot of lectures and those at work.

After we found our location the basic scenario of a thief and a victim came into mind where the thief steals a bag from a girl a ‘hero’ tries to rescue the bag which leads to him being beaten up and ultimately the girl turns into the ‘hero’ which is the opposite to the way things should be.

  • Female Victim & Hero / Girlfriend – this character will be played by Isabella. She will wear her casual clothing. She has her bag stolen from her and is portrayed as the ‘victim’ however she is smart and thinks logically on how to get her bag back. Furthermore she is the real ‘hero’ as she takes down both thieves with her concealed strength and her bag is returned. Plus she adds a little bit of humour to our film.
  • Male ‘Hero’ / Boyfriend – this character will be played by Harry. He also wears his casual clothing. Wants to be the ‘hero’ and chases the male thief after the bag had been thrown down to the female thief. However things turn around for him and he gets hurt by the thief. Portrayed as ‘victim’.
  • Male Thief – this character will be played by Jack. He will wear a hood in order to hide and disguise himself. Jack will be directed to take the bag from the female thief. He does not keep hold of the bag however gets most of the beating from both ‘heroes’.
  • Female Thief – this character will be played by myself. I will wear dark clothing in order to portray myself as the bad gurl. I am the ‘villain’ and the the ‘director’ since Jack will nod slightly at me to know its good to go to steal the bag. I run with the bag thinking I have gotten away with the crime however I get caught, beaten and run away before anything further happens to me.

Lastly we discussed a little about camera angles. We aim for long shots (corridors), medium shots, close ups (hands & feet), handheld/ running shots, low/high angle shots (CCTV camera), over the shoulder, panning, point of view shots, etc in our short film.

The team (+Harry) has come in on a Saturday to produce our short film. We were only given a Canon 600D camera with standard kit lens to produce our short film. No tripod. No action camera. No alternative lenses. The images below are stills of production.

Panning shot of couple coming from staircase, featuring Abi on camera. This gave a visual affect that something was coming from behind them.

Image 1 – Isabella running behind Jack and Harry for over the shoulder shot. Image 2 – panning shot of Jack and Harry running down stairs. Image 3 – low angle shot of the boys feet running down the corridor. Image 4 – high angle CCTV camera shot.

Multiple shots of Isabella in the lift, with Abi, Elise and I on camera. This emphasised that Isabella was urgently wanting to get down stairs to get her bag back. Also added a little bit of comedy into the lift scene.

Chase scene goes outside. Image 1 – panning & close up shot of hands as they run down stairs. Image 2 – Abi’s point of view of being hit by Jack. Image 3 – the ‘non – staged’ fight scene between Jack and Harry.

Image 1 – medium angle of Isabella checking if Harry is ok. Added comedy. Image 2- over the shoulder of Isabella running after Jack. Image 3 – take down. Surprised. YES!

‘Special Effects’ / makeup of Harry after his beating. Poor Harry :)(:

Overall the production of our short film went very well. The team helped one another in all aspects and we all definitely had a similar frame of mind on what we wanted the outcome to be.

Our production took 2 days to film and once all footage was collected we uploaded them to Adobe Premiere CC to order and edited, add sound, add visual effects and to add black outs in order to produce our end product.

To be continued.. :)(:
