“If plan A didn’t work. The alphabet still has 25 more letter. Stay cool!” – Mum
Recently I have been in collaboration with Level 6 students from Glyndwr Universities Theatre, Performance and Television department. Previously I’d done some photography for their Alice in Wonderland production and they had invited me again to take part in capturing and showcasing their adaptation to “Street of Crocodiles”. They wanted photographs of the piece and also a video montage of some of the creative process behind it. I’d started understanding the production over the time spent with them and with a little assistance from Rebecca their lecturer and the visual director of the production we both decided that making a “documentary” about the play would be a great idea especially if it could be shown during the audiences arrival. I had completely control over the visuals of this documentary and the only thing that Rebecca wanted to include was the question “What is memory?” to the cast members. Again other than that she was more than happy for me to experiment with different media and techniques and if honest this is the first time I’ve ever creating something for someone else and been extremely proud of my results. “To me, movies and music go hand in hand. When I’m writing a script, one of the first things I do is find the music I’m going to play for the opening sequence” – Quentin Tarantino
Other things that I must take into consideration is opening title and closing sequences. These are designed to set the tone, mood and atmosphere before the short film begins. It also is an insight to what the audience is about to see so should have as much importance as the short film. The closing sequence is also aimed to give credit and a thank you to all those that have helped when creating the short film.
“Sometimes the mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work if it is not open” – Frank Zappa
Today as a group we had come to the agreement of picking the Afterthought as our main idea and wanted to create it to be a hybrid genre of Psychological / Horror. Again this idea consists of a young girl is having a informal discussion with a psychiatrist. From there the psychiatrist asks the girl a range of questions including ones about her aims for the future and the “afterthought” would be these flash forwards / backs of her life and what she aimed for the future. The girl is then asked about any regrets and she has a flash back of when she committed a murder now regretting the fact that she is now a young offender who has no future. Continue reading
“Filmmakers are going to make films, just like painters are going to paint” – Richard Linklater
Now that we have completed our music videos and successfully submitted everything in it is now time to move towards creating a short film. We were given a brief by Joe to create a short film between 5 to 8 minutes long. We had the decision to again work within a group or individually. We were given a set of titles and genres which we must use in order to create our film. The idea is to interpret these titles and genres in our own way to plan and produce a strong concept matching with whatever we have picked. There is such a variety of things that we could do and it is just sitting down and thoroughly planning what that is.
